The United Nations (UN) is an intergovernmental organization entrusted with keeping up worldwide harmony and security, growing well-disposed relations among countries, accomplishing global co-activity, and being a center for harmonizing the activities of nations. Established after World War II, the UN is even more relevant today. The world is huge, and nations are far apart from each other. Closing this gap is critically important as progress in climate, development, and humanitarian issues spur progress in other areas.
Instead of considering these to be as different endeavors, we would ideally be served to take a look at the consistent subjects that keep running over each territory to help us to remember the need to think about all-encompassing, possible solutions to reach the world’s most vulnerable populations while addressing fundamental issues undermining harmony and prosperity.

UN Workforce
Like the diplomatic corps, the diverse workforce, and how they apply global and intercultural theories when working to combat international issues, I found impressive. Many of the subject-matter experts the UN employs are passionate, professional, and respect diversity. They are resourceful, diplomatic, and have excellent interpersonal skills to work well with external partners so that vulnerable populations get the help they need without judgment.
Captivating Highlights of My Experience
A few highlights of my UN experience involved working with diverse groups of people. I learned about different cultures and religions, and my openness allowed for building good working relationships and teamwork. Here I collaborated with various internal and external partners. Studying public administration, coupled with hard work and observing management, allowed me to take on a more challenging role. I learned how to be more efficient and streamline processes that reduced risks. I also learned how to communicate more effectively and improved stakeholder service. Implementing techniques to monitor and evaluate operations helped improve our performance to achieve results in line with UN strategic plans and mandates.
Colleagues
Showing up for work was a treat. The humor, listening to jovial conversation and banter between colleagues that I will keep fresh in my mind for years to come. It was also special how colleagues came together to support each other during challenging times and celebratory occasions. The lasting friendships made with people from different parts of the world remain dear to my heart to this day.
Besides, the staff association, together with management, ensured the staff gathered together for community projects, fun, and excitement at times.
Expats and Nationals
Meeting and observing other passionate expats make a positive difference in the lives of so many was encouraging. Considering how fun and supportive the expat community was, it was helpful in seasons of doubt. It was equally significant meeting and befriending nationals that welcomed me and took the time to teach me about their culture and the true meaning of resilience, love, and forgiveness.
Adventure
The UN helped me to become intimate with the world and allowed me to learn new skills and work in diverse fields, and take on adventurous assignments. I will always be grateful to the UN and UN leadership for allowing me the opportunity to fulfill my vocation.
The world is complex and needs passionate and experienced international civil servants. The UN and I still have time to get reacquainted!
