UN-ICTR’s leadership’s ability to consistently show concern for staff, especially for those who were far away from family and friends, was unheard but influential and impressive. This type of leadership was absent in my previous professional environments. UN principals showed compassion for those affected by horrific events, as they led the fight against impunity  and brought to justice those responsible for committing inhumane acts against humanity.

Senior management had diverse skill-sets that allowed them to work to achieve the ICTR’s mandate. They made effective decisions, worked to streamline processes, used diplomacy to handle challenges, showed compassion for those we served, and supporting others facing hardship. They genuinely listened to staff, offered unique guidance and solutions, inspired innovation and influenced staff to be accountable, dedicated to serving the people of Rwanda, and to maintain decorum.  Their different styles of management made staff feel valued, competent, and as an important limb of the organization.

Imagine what going to work every day would be like if there were more thoughtful leadership in the workplace?
