Concern, compassion, service

Concern, compassion, service—these values have shaped my professional journey. My career has been devoted to public service, driven by a deep desire to give back to the community and help those in need. As a concerned citizen of New York City, I volunteered and mentored with several community-based organizations, such as WomenCare, which supports incarcerated mothers as they prepare for life after release; Sanctuary for Families, a shelter for women in crisis; and the Abyssinian Baptist Church Afterschool Program, which empowers youth to develop confidence and self-sufficiency.

Inspired by my experiences, I joined the NYPD to overcome my own challenges with anxiety and shyness, particularly during New York City’s volatile years amid the crack epidemic. This role ignited my passion for service and deepened my sense of responsibility to protect and serve.

Driven by compassion, I later made the difficult decision to leave behind the comforts of home and culture to serve as a Community Health Worker with the Peace Corps in Burkina Faso. There, I worked tirelessly to improve healthcare and contribute to meaningful change in a rural setting. Following that, I joined the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR), where I helped bring justice to those responsible for the 1994 genocide, which claimed over 800,000 lives.

Today, I serve as the Director of Operations for a non-profit behavioral health organization, where I oversee three counseling and medication management sites, along with a methadone clinic. With over 17 years of international experience in security and supply chain management across five countries, I remain committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of the vulnerable and working alongside like-minded individuals who share my vision for a more prosperous, secure, and equitable world. I firmly believe that all people deserve access to healthcare, education, and nourishment, and that empowering youth is key to shaping a better tomorrow.

In my personal life, I am an equestrian enthusiast, passionate about staying active through running, hiking, weight training, biking, and sports like squash and tennis. Travel is one of my greatest joys, and I love meeting new people, exploring different cultures, and indulging in diverse cuisines.

This blog is a culmination of years of encouragement from friends who found my stories of expat life captivating. If you love adventure, have a passion for public service, or are curious about life as an expat, you’ll enjoy my “Adventures of an Expat” blog. My love for Africa and dedication to service continue to inspire the stories I share, and I invite you to join me on this ongoing journey. Stay tuned!
