In 1996, one Christmas Day, I was working, and the precinct was quiet, I read a Black Enterprise magazine, and there was an article about the need for Peace Corps to have more African American volunteers. After the Christmas holiday, I called Peace Corps and made an appointment with a recruiter in NYC. My recruiter was a young and enthusiastic black man who served three years in Africa. He was encouraging and worked with me throughout the application process.
To my surprise, the process was effortless. Looking at the fact that I had to move around the Midwest a lot while growing up made me nervous about how long the process would take. As the investigators had to get reports from every school I attended, a police report from every city I lived in, information from every job I had. I was overjoyed when I received my acceptance letter. I was so ready to move to an African village where I would help with development projects. It turned out; I would be assigned as a community health worker in Burkina Faso. It turned out to be another outstanding adventure for me.
