Adventures of an Expat; by way of my Love for Africa and Passion for Service, I Found my Vocation.

Embracing the Expat Life: A Journey of Growth and Connection

Life as an expat is an extraordinary tapestry of challenges and triumphs—a delicate dance of letting go and embracing the unknown. It’s about deciding what to carry with you—not just in your suitcase but in your heart—and what to leave behind to make space for something new. It’s about stepping forward with courage, knowing that the adventure waiting ahead holds the promise of transformation.

Yes, the path is not always easy. Leaving behind family and friends is a heartache felt deeply as you watch their lives unfold through the filter of social media, distant emails, and calls that never feel long enough. But with every goodbye comes the chance to say hello—to forge new connections, build a home in unexpected places, and discover the beauty of shared humanity. If you dream of becoming an expat, know this: it will stretch, challenge, and bless you in ways you cannot yet imagine.

As I reflect on the journals I kept during my expat journey in the 1990s and early 2000s, one thing stands clear—faith was my anchor. I turned to God for guidance, strength, and comfort in moments of doubt, loneliness, or uncertainty. Verses like Jeremiah 29:11 reminded me of a more excellent plan at work: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” These promises carried me through and gave me peace as I walked this extraordinary path.

Being an expat is not just about traveling to new places—it’s about serving humanity, witnessing the resilience and beauty of people from all walks of life, and growing in ways you never imagined. It’s the joy of tasting new flavors, hearing stories in familiar and foreign languages, and seeing landscapes so breathtaking they stay etched in your soul forever. It’s finding gratitude in the smallest moments and inspiration in the diversity of cultures, art, music, and traditions.

To live as an expat is to embrace the world with an open heart, a curious spirit, and a willingness to grow. It’s a gift that leaves you with unforgettable experiences, life lessons, and stories that inspire hope and wonder in others.

Wherever this journey takes you, know that the adventure is not just out there—it’s also within you.

Let me know if you’d like to refine it further!
